DARBY REPORTED TO EREDO’S small airfield with Cemric early the next morning. She shifted her satchel, which contained clothing for the trip, in order to rub her upper arm. It was sore after receiving the mysterious syringe of language serum. Cemric told her it should begin to take effect within an hour. She’d know it was working when she could understand Ozarian.

The desert air retained its nighttime coolness as dawn began to emerge on the horizon. It wouldn’t be long now before she was on her way to another part of the planet, west of here.

Mairin was already waiting for them at the airfield. She stood below the steps leading up to a triangular aircraft resembling a flying saucer with the wings of a Boeing jet. The vehicle thrummed idly as Darby and Cemric came to stand beneath it. “We should board now.” Mairin wasted no time. “The skies are clear. We can reach Hamon by the afternoon.”

Darby climbed the steps after her. She had to admit, it was unnerving to board an aircraft again after the shuttle crash, especially one completely foreign to her. She glanced over her shoulder at Cemric, who wore a face of stone as he took the steps to get inside the aircraft’s cabin. He carried a rucksack on his back.

The cabin had a sparse appearance, with shiny metal floors and ceilings. Its walls blinked with flashing buttons labeled with symbols like the ones Darby saw in Cemric’s military books and throughout the citadel. She didn’t see any seats for passengers near the entrance.

Mairin led them through a door to another compartment of the cabin. This one did have seats. “Commander, you and Darby will be situated here for the duration of the flight. If you need anything, I’ll be in the next compartment.” She indicated to another door a short distance away.

Once she left, Darby stashed her satchel under a seat and sat down. “Guess we’re in for a long flight.”

Cemric sat across from her. “Very long. Hamon is half a world away.”

“Have you ever been to the kingdom before?”

“No, and I’m not looking forward to my first visit.”

“Yeah, I noticed. You’ve been acting like this since we left King Laven’s castle. I don’t think you’ve spoken more than three sentences to me since.”

The aircraft’s engines turned on, indicating the pilots were preparing for takeoff. Cemric cast an untrusting eye towards the cockpit. “I’m a soldier, not a politician. These affairs of state leave a bad taste in my mouth.”

“I get what you’re saying. I had to play politics, too, on Earth. But what we’re doing now isn’t your run-of-the-mill butt-kissing. We’re going to take care of the Kryt problem.”

“It doesn’t mean I have to like the methods being used. Too much kowtowing and worrying about tact.”

The floor vibrated before the ship lifted in the air. Darby watched from a window as the airfield became small beneath them. “How’d you become commander of the king’s army?”

“For a tidy sum, my parents gave me to the army’s care when I was thirteen.
